Ethical Catering - How to Be More Ethical With Your Food and Catering Choices

This article is a list of suggestions regarding how to eat and cater ethically. In this current climate it is getting increasingly difficult to spend the money on high end organic and/or free range products due to their ever increasing price tag. However, this doesn't have to be the case.

I am an omnivore, I couldn't be a vegetarian because I love meat too much. This doesn't mean that I want animals to suffer cruel and disgusting lives and deaths. This might sound like a contradiction but it is for you to make up your own minds about whether eating another sentient being is morally acceptable for you. I have concluded that as long as the animal has had a good life, doing what animals do, eating grass, being outside, allowed access to pasture, and so on, and as long as they are killed quickly and humanely, then I will eat them.

What we do

As a family and as part of our business model we decided to eat ethically treated animals when we can. Implementing this through the business was not too hard really, we just jumbled some numbers around and were able to fit the extra costs in. But as a family on a tight budget (as is everyone else these days) we adopted a simple strategy which I want to convey to you.

If free range and/or organic meat are 25% more expensive, simply eat 25% less meat.

It's not rocket science is it? Western country populations generally consume too much meat on our plates anyway. This is a way in which you can be both healthier and more ethical to animals.

The benefits of free range and/or organic include, but are not limited to: It is a better product, it is healthier, less chemicals, better flavour, usually locally grown or reared which helps the local economy, if you eat less then it costs exactly the same as your normal shop.

What else can you do?

Tea and coffee are important issues ethically! Try to drink fair trade tea and coffee if possible. Google fair trade tea and coffee and see which brands are available in your country. If those brands are more expensive then simply consume less.

Try growing your own fruit and vegetables too. The non-organic products in the supermarkets are usually sprayed with chemicals. Buying from a big supermarket chain produces a demand for these chemicals and encourages companies to supply the same chemicals. If there is no demand then there will be no supply. It is my opinion that we don't need any more chemicals in our food, therefore the ethical choice would be to not use these items. I am luck enough to live in a country where I can grow almost anything. If this is not the case then grow what you can in your own country, potatoes, tomatoes, beetroot and then buy the rest.

If you want to live an ethical life, eating ethically is a great first step. It doesn't matter if you can't implement all of the abovementioned ideas at once. Just do one now! Make the choice to do just one thing to make your life more ethical and you will be doing something great for your family, children, community and environment. Remember, no demand = no supply.
